PSEB1 MW solar photovoltaic power plant at Lalru in Mohali being constructed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) would be commissioned by March 2010. Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) on September 17 this year had signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the company for purchase of solar power.Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) joint director MP Singh said that after the signing of an MoU, the company has assured to complete the project by March 2010.

According to sources, project involves an outlay of around Rs 25 crore and would come up on build operate and own (BOO) basis. The power generated from this project would be evacuated to the state grid at a tariff of Rs 8.93 per unit, sources added.

The state government after planning to generate 18MW power through solar photovoltaic power project plants, has started the process to allocate other such projects. Lalru project was allocated by PEDA on August 6, 2008, and the implementation agreement was signed on March 2 this year. The expected date of commissioning of the project is March next year and the plant is being set up under NRSE policy-2006 of Punjab government.

This is the third solar photovoltaic power plant being set up in Punjab. Earlier, a power purchase agreement was signed with Azure Power, which is setting up 2MW solar photovoltaic power plant at Ajnala in Amritsar district.

Another solar photovoltaic power plant of 200KW capacity has already been commissioned in Khatkar Kalan. The renewable energy projects are of great importance both for resource utilisation and environment in order to bridge the gap between demand and supply of power in the state, said senior officials of PEDA, adding that the power purchase agreement for 30 years signed will PSEB assures that after starting power generation customers would not have to look out for buyers.
