Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) on energy saving campaign

PunjabIf just 24 of Punjab’s big industries follow conservation norms, they will be able to save half the electricity the state needs. This suggestion emerging from the audit report of Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) — to save 11 million unit annually — seems to be an answer to the severe power crisis here.In an irony of sorts, while manufacturing units have been hit by long hours of outages, the report points out that self-regulation practised by the industry will mean regular power supply not just to it but also the state in general. Based on energy audit in two dozen industries including the ones in Ludhiana, Mandi Gobindgarh and Derabassi, the data collated says even government departments can contribute to conserve electricity.

A study conducted in PSEB head office, Patiala, PUDA Bhawan, Mohali and MARKFED in Chandigarh for adoption of energy-efficient measures revealed net saving potential as 187 MWh per annum.

According to load generation balance report of Central Electricity Authority, the net energy requirement during 2008-09 was 43,796 million unit against the anticipated availability of 39,093 million unit.

“To set an example for the industry, PEDA — the state-designated agency to co-ordinate, regulate and enforce energy conservation Act — has tied up with USAID for energy conservation activity in the cluster of small and medium enterprises (SME) in textile industries of Ludhiana and steel-rolling mills in Mandi Gobindgarh,” said PEDA chief executive TPS Sidhu.

Although an audit was mandatory for designated consumers, Balour Singh, director PEDA, said, “Keeping in view the situation in the state, these energy audits should be made mandatory for SMEs also because designated consumers — industries utilizing energy equivalent to 30,000 metric tonne oil — are not many here.”

Among such consumers, Punjab Alkalis has shown great results in energy conservation and it is reflected in the report. ‘‘This is the most important issue today. We have set up energy conservation teams in all units and we also conduct audits regularly. Because we believe energy-saving potential lies everywhere,’’ emphasized VK Goyal, chief executive, Vardhman Spinning and General Mills.
