Privatisation of power sector is going to dent the pockets of power consumers in Delhi. Delhiites could be paying up to 70% more on power bills from April 2010 if discoms have their way. As per the tariff petitions submitted to Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), discoms BYPL, BRPL and NDPL are showing a combined total gap of about Rs 5,541 crore between the cost and revenue of the past two years and revenue projection for 2010-11.Since the next tariff will be decided based on this difference and that of next year’s (2010-2011) projected gap, Delhiites are likely to be hit hard depending on how much gap is accepted by the regulator.
‘‘As per the gaps the discoms are showing in their petitions, tariff for BRPL could go up by 69.6%, for BYPL the hike could be 60.04% and for NDPL 52.49%,’’ said a senior official. Only NDMC is not seeking a tariff hike as it is showing a surplus in its petition.
