The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has offerred some relief to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL), which supplies power to over 1.5 crore consumers in the state, including Mumbai’s Mulund, Bhandup and Kanjurmarg suburbs and is yet to recover over Rs 9,000 crore pending dues from its consumers. The MERC has directed the Mula Pravara Electric Cooperative Society Ltd (MPECSL), an agency that supplies 200 MW power to Shrirampur and Rahuri talukas of Ahmednagar district after buying it from the MSEDCL, to pay the monthly bills (Rs 17 crore to Rs 19 crore) after depositing equal amount a month in advance.

Last month, the MERC had warned MPECSL to pay MSEDCL bills as per the revised rate defined by the commission or buy power from outside. The directive came in on Thursday when MERC admitted MSEDCL’s petition seeking cancellation of MPECSL license, which is expiring in 2011.

MPECSL has dues of over Rs 1,800 crore to be paid to MSEDCL since 1976. The MERC has decided a revised rate of Rs 2 per unit for MPECSL. If MPECSL agrees to the revised rates, then it is bound to pay dues of over Rs 2,000 crore.

The Mula Pravara Electric Co-operative Society Limited, Shrirampur  (MPECS) was established in 1969, as one of the five pilot co-operative societies established in India as a  rural electric co-operative Society. It distributes electricity in 183 villages spread over five talukas in the Ahmednagar district. Its consumer base spans around 1.45 lakh consumers having sanctioned load of around 207 MW and MPECS receives power from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) at 33 kV and 11kV interface points.
