Power starved karnataka state within a few weeks will buy 300 MW power from Chhattisgarh. The power will be drawn once the rate per unit to be paid is finalised, said Energy Minister K S Eshwarappa.Talking to The media he said that negotiations between the two state governments had been going on and the rate would be finalised by this month itself.

In fact, the negotiation should have been over by this time.  But, since both Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and Energy Minister Eshwarappa were busy with the Legislature Session in Belgaum they could not take the issue further.“Our aim is to ensure power supply between 6 and 10 pm everyday so that the public in general and the students in particular do not suffer. Since examinations are nearing we must ensure power supply during that prime time,’’ Eshwarappa said.

The 300 MW power to be purchased is in addition to the power being already purchased from other sources.  The state government is taking around 280 MW power from sugar factory, which have cogeneration units and 200 MW from GMR (Thannirbhavi) and 200 MW from Jindal, he added. Sugar factories give power at Rs 6.50 per unit, GMR gives at Rs 5.50 per unit and Jindal at Rs 6.50 per unit. 

There is a difference in the rate of energy purchased from GMR and Jindal because of difference in the price of naptha and coal, he pointed out.

Eshwarappa hoped that next year such problem might not arise because new projects would come up and certain percent of power would be saved in the present consumption following the implementation of ‘Niranthara Jyothi’ scheme.

According to him, next year the eighth unit of the Raichur Thermal Power Plant having an installed capacity of 250 MW, would come up by November and around 507.5 MW power would come from Udupi Power Corporation based on imported coal.  Negotiations are going on

about the price of the energy to be purchased from UPC and the price may be fixed anywhere below Rs 3 per unit, he felt. In addition, 500 MW of power is expected to come from wind energy, he added.
