Wind EnergyMinister of State for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Shri Vilas Muttemwar replied in a written question by Shri Ram Singh Kaswan in Lok Sabha that a total of 26.95 billion units of electricity was generated from wind power projects during the last three years viz., 2005-06 to 2007-08. India having the installed capacity of 9645 MW occupies fifth position in the world at the end of 2008, after USA, Germany, Spain and China with installed capacity of 25,170 MW; 23,900 MW; 16,754 MW and 12,210 respectively. The capacity addition in wind power depends on various factors such as quality of wind potential, incentives mechanism, feed in tariff, higher percentages of commitments for renewable energy including wind energy, manufacturing cost, etc.

The Steps taken by the Government to promote setting up of commercial wind power projects through private sector investments include fiscal incentives such as concessional import duty on certain components of wind electric generator, excise duty exemption, ten years’ tax holiday on income generated from wind power projects, benefit of accelerated depreciation and loan from Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA). Technical support, including detailed wind resource assessment to identify further potential sites, is provided by the Centre for Wind Energy Technology (C-WET), Chennai. This apart, preferential tariff is being provided for wind power by potential States.
