Palakkad will be marked on the country’s map as the first totally electrified district at a function to be inaugurated by Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde at Ottappalam on 2010 February 16 at 9AM. Out of the 11 assembly constituencies in the district, eight had already been fully electrified and electrification of all houses in the remaining segments of Malampuzha, Ottapalam and Mannarkad would be completed by February 11.

Kerala State Electricity Board targeted to complete electrification of another 100 assembly segments during the current calender year, he said. The state has 141 assembly segments.Power infrastructure to a tune of Rs.520 crores had been created in Palakkad District during the LDF rule.

The public meeting in this connection will be inaugurated by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan. Electricity Minister A.K. Balan, Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran, Public Works Minister P.J. Joseph, Transport Minister Jose Thettayil, Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty and Water Resources Minister M.K. Premachandran will attend the function.

The total electrification programme comes as a bonanza to a large number of tribes who live in remote forest areas in the district where drawing power lines is almost impossible. The highlight of the Total Electrification Scheme is that power lines were drawn for more than 10 to 15 km so as to provide power supply to areas like Moolaganga adivasi ooru in Attapadi.

An exhibition in this connection will be held from February 11 at the municipal stand in Ottappalam. Over 60 stalls, including that of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Medical College, Pharmaceutical College, Industries Department, Aeronautical College and Engineering institutions, will feature in the expo.

On February 10, school students in the district will recite a pledge highlighting the importance of total electrification and the need for energy conservation.

The kerala Electricity Minister hailed the cooperation of MLAs, MPs, four municipalities, district panchayats, 13 block panchayats and 91 grama panchayats apart from the departments of Revenue and Forest in making the scheme a reality.

The `Total Electrification’ project was implemented in the panchayats of Vadakarapathy, Eruthenpathy, Kozhinjampara, Nallepilly, Pattancherry, Perumatty, Vadakarapathy and Vadavannur as well as the municipal areas of Chittur and Thattamangalam.

State Power Minister A K Balan said no other district has so far come forward to embrace the title of ‘the fully electrified district’. In metros, there could be slums which do not have electricity. “Hence, we can make the claim to be the first fully electrified district.” He said the board has ensured power on demand in the entire district. The KSEB has no provision to meet the expenses of wiring and the requirements on the part of the consumers. In the case of weaker families, the board has suggested the local bodies and welfare departments to financially support them.
