kayamkulam Thermal Power stationThe Union Power Ministry has written to Kerala seeking transfer of power from the Kayamkulam Thermal Power plant to the central pool, Power Minister A.K. Balan told a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram on 09-01-2009.He said that Kerala will in no way agree to it, especially in the present scenario when the State is not even getting its due share from the central pool. There is no question of a discussion on sharing power from Kayakulam, Balan said.

People should jointly oppose any move to reduce Kerala's power share from the plant at a time when the state was facing grave power crisis,  State Electricity Minister A K Balan told reporters.

He said NTPC's Kayamkulam plant was set up in 1995 exclusively for the requirements of the state. The power from the 360 mw plant was being shared with Tamil Nadu since 2003.

Kerala government had paid Rs 1,474 crore as fixed charges for the plant which was set up at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore. While the state got power from the plant at a rate of Rs 2.50 per unit initially, with the increase in the price of naphtha fuel, it had shot up to Rs 13 at a point of time.

The state had been paying the fixed charges even when it was not using power from the plant. Now that the price of naphtha had come down, states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh had started seeking share from the plant which could not be allowed,he said.
