LDF Government want to convert the KSEB into a successful public sector unit with generation, transmission and distribution under one umbrella, without unbundling them - MinisterThe LDF Government want to convert the KSEB into a successful public sector unit with generation, transmission and distribution under one umbrella, without unbundling them , Kerala Electricity Minister Sri. AK Balan said at Kozhikode on 17-11-2008 while addressing a special meeting of KSEB northern region officers in Calicut Towers, Kozhikode.

The restructuring of the Kerala State Electricity Board would in no way deprive or scale down its employees of their wages, pension and other perks. Balan explained that the LDF Government was forced to implement the restructuring of the KSEB on the direction of the Central Government. Central Government was not ready to give extension to KSEB as we were not ready to form a separate company for transmission. He called upon the officers to understand the the situation properly and work for improving the productivity of KSEB to show that this alternate model is better than the center government sponsored unbundling happened in many states.

Employees need to show their commitment and efficiency which alone would strengthen the public sector. The private sector will find no room to intrude into the power sector if the public sector is strong, The shares of the power sector need not have to be sold if the public sector proves itself to be profit- making. Employees should discharge their duties promptly and meaningfully. The minister pointed out that KSEB’s transmission and distribution losses had been brought down to 21%. It is aimed to further reduce the loss to 15%.

The open source software - ORUMA designed and introduced by the engineers and workers of the Board was excellent, helping it to earn a profit of Rs 4 crore. This is a fine example of our team work and efficiency. Each employee should work for consumer satisfaction. In the process of decentralization of power, Assistant Engineers were entrusted with a lot of powers. But it should be utilized to smoothen the system of work and ensure more consumer satisfaction. The civil wing is more important as it is actually behind designing and executing new projects. he stressed that generation projects are to be completed on war-foot basis and any slackness will be viewed seriously. The minister also said a system would be introduced to evaluate the performance of each employee.

KSEB Chairman Sri. Rajeev sadanandan, KSEB member (distribution and transmission) Sri. K Asokan, and  member (generation) Sri. Vivekanandan also spoke during the function.
