Kerala Electricity Minister Sri. AK Balan said on 08-11-2008 at Iritty that the power restrictions including half hour load shedding and thermal surcharge will be withdrawn immediately if the centre restores the allocated power quota of Kerala. Minister was elaborating the power situation in Kerala during the inauguration of Adivasi Kshema Samithi Kannur district Convention.Share of electricity from the central pool had also been reduced considerably putting the state into a severe power crisis. The share of electricity from the central pool has gone down to 650 MW in November this year. The state is to get 1,188 MW electricity per month from the central pool.
The intention of the Central Government is to keep the people of Kerala in darkness and direct the agony of public towards the Kerala Government. By protecting the interest of the people, Kerala is somehow managing the power shortage with just half hour load shedding. comparing with Kerala, 12 hour load shedding exists in Karnataka, Maharashtra and 8 hours load shedding exists in Tamil Nadu.
Even though the power is purchased at more than Rs.8/- per unit, tariff is increased for domestic consumers with monthly consumption more than 200 units. Only 1.75 lakhs consumers out of 92 lakhs consumers in Kerala will be effected by the tariff rise.
