Kerala government has planned to set up a 4,000 MW power project in next 10 years, which would help in reducing energy shortage and will promote new industrial investments. This would encourage investors to set up new industrial units in Kerala, state Power Minister A K Balan said at a function while launching the Kerala chapter of the Indian Green Buildings Council (IGBC) , Kochi.To reduce the power loss during transmission, Rs 1,800 crore had been spent so far, he said adding at present about 22 per cent of power was lost in transmission/ Distribution. 96 substations would be set up in the state, he said. The government was in the process of giving a final shape for setting up a 2400 MW power project in Cheemeni, Kasaragod. About 2,000 acres had been acquired for the purpose, he said.
Stating that automation works for power transmission in Kochi was on, he said about Rs 100 crore would be spent by the government for laying underground cables in city which would ensure uninterrupted power supply. The tender in this regard has already been submitted. Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode would also get similar facilities, he said.
Stressing the need for conserving energy, the Minister said he had accepted the suggestion made by Ernakulam District Collector Dr M Beena to convert one district as a model district with buildings friendly for energy conservation. L Radhakrishnan, Power and Port Secretary, said there was need to reduce consumption of energy and utilise water resources efficiently.
