Fifteen Assembly segments of the State have been covered by the ‘100 per cent electrification programme’ of the State government. Kollam has become the first Assembly segment in the country to attain both total electrification and voltage complaint-free status, according to Electricity Minister A.K. Balan. Talking to The media, K. Ashokan, Member (Transmission and Distribution) of the Kerala State Electricity Board, said that by March 31, another 28 Assembly segments would be covered by the 100 per cent electrification programme. Work to attain the target was progressing in those constituencies. The aim of the government was to cover the entire State by the end of its tenure, he said. Under the total electrification programme, a committee was constituted for each constituency. For the poor, the expenditure for internal wiring in their houses was met by the respective committee.
The programme was undertaken after carefully identifying the beneficiaries, he said.
Mr. Ashokan said the total cost for the programme was estimated at Rs.420 crore. The average expenditure for each constituency touched Rs.3 crore. But there would be some constituencies which needed more.
He said that by December 31, Palakkad would be declared the first district in the State (and even in the country) to be covered by the total electrification programme.
Along with the total electrification programme, the government was also carrying forward a Rs.110-crore voltage complaint-free programme.
